MISSION OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS
The American Red Cross is a Humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. It does this through services that are consistent with its congressional charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross Movement.
In an average year the American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter aids 500 people affected by single-family fires, and trains 3000 people in First Aid/CPR.
Disaster Services
We Respond
Anytime a disaster strikes, The American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter responds at a moment's notice to help the victims with immediate needs and to help to rebuild their lives.

We Assist
Once the emergency phase of a disaster has passed, trained American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter volunteers meet with disaster victims and provide them with the means to get back on their feet. This is done by offering vouchers to purchase essentials like food, furniture, and clothing.
We Comfort
American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter mental health workers are available to help people cope with the emotional aftermath of disasters. They provide a hand to hold, an ear for listening, and a shoulder to rest on.
We Study
All American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter disaster workers are trained to provide major disaster response functions of mass care, damage assessment, and family services.

We Donate
Disaster Services are offered to victims free of charge through the generous support of our donors. No payment for disaster relief services is ever requested or expected. The American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter offers it as a gift from the American people.
Health and Safety Services
We Teach
The American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter offers health and safety education programs to corporations and community members to teach people how to avoid emergencies and to change the outcomes of potentially fatal situations.

We Coach
The American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter trains more lifeguards than all other organizations combined, making us the industrial leader in aquatics safety programs.

We Aid
First Aid and CPR courses illustrate how to "Check, Call and Care" when an accident is encountered. The West Alabama Chapter provides:
- Standard First Aid and CPR
- Avoiding Sports Injury
- Babysitting Class
- Pet First Aid/CPR and many more!

Military Services
We Communicate
A twenty-four hour emergency communication system to military bases around the world is the primary military service that the American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter provides. The messages are usually urgent in nature, dealing with births, the death of close family members, or illness.

We Provide
The American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter also provides financial assistance to military families in the form of an interest-free loan or grant. Loans or grants are often given to help pay for emergency travel or to help meet household needs if circumstances have created a hardship.
We Link
Through International Tracing Services, The American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter helps local residents recover lost communications with relatives cut off from the rest of the world due to a natural disaster or civil unrest. We are a messenger of hope for people around the world.

HELP!! The POWER is OUT....Sudden power outages can be FRUSTRATING and TROUBLESOME, especially when they are prolonged. Perishable foods should not be held above 40 degrees for more than 2 hours.
If a power outage is 2 hours or less, you need not be concerned..........but how do you save your food when the refrigerator is out for longer times? Being prepared can help. By planning ahead, you can save your perishables.
WHAT DO I NEED?.......One or more COOLERS. Inexpensive styrofoam coolers can do an excellent job as well........ICE. Surrounding your food with ice in a cooler will ensure that it will stay cold........SHELF-STABLE FOODS, such as canned goods and powdered or boxed milk. These can be eaten cold or heated on the grill..... A digital quick-response THERMOMETER. A digital thermometer should be a necessity in your kitchen anyway. With these thermometers you can quickly check the internal temperatures of food for doneness and safety.
WHAT TO DO.......DO NOT OPEN THE REFRIGERATOR OR FREEZER. Tell your little ones not to open the door. An unopened refrigerator will keep foods cold enough for a couple of hours at least. A freezer that is half full will hold for up to 24 hours and a full freezer for 48 hours........If it looks like the power outage will be for more than 2-4 hours, pack refrigerated milk, dairy products, meats, fish, poultry, eggs, gravy, stuffing and left-overs into your COOLER surrounded by ICE........If it looks like the power outage will be PROLONGED, prepare a cooler with ice for your freezer items.
